Loose Id have been busy releasing their backlist through their distributors. And with perfect timing, the New year's Eve themed anthology A Kiss At Midnight has just gone up at Fictionwise. This is an anthology of three sf&f romance novellas, from myself, Emily Veinglory, and Ally Blue. Here's the blurb for mine. As usual, there are excerpts on my website, and short blurbs and excerpts for all three novellas on Loose Id's website.

First Footer

They say that how you spend New Year's Day will set the pattern for the rest of your year. Matthew Ryder was hoping not to be single by the end of the New Year's Eve party, but the blind date promised by his matchmaking friend never showed up. Still, there's always hope in the form of the old custom of First Footing. To bring good luck to the household, the first person across the threshold after midnight should be a tall dark man holding a lump of coal and a bottle of whisky, and in some places they still like to provide this service for neighbours.

A tall dark stranger does indeed knock on the door at midnight, and he's the man of Matthew's dreams. Intelligent, good sense of humour. Handsome too, if you go for fur, tail, and a very seductive purr. For the First Footer is a First Contact team member, with a bit of a problem. There's making a discreet landing in an uninhabited area, and then there's landing your spacecraft in a peat bog.

It's going to be an interesting year for Matthew...

I've just uploaded the draft page of The Syndicate: Volume 2, which means the whole series is now available as free downloads on my site. I haven't finished updating the rest of the site to match yet, so you may need to use the links below for the moment to find the pages:

Volume 1
Volume 2
Volume 3
Four Leaf Clover

Volumes 1 and 2 are actually parts 1 and 2 of a single novel constructed as a fix-up. Volume 3 is a sequel which follows on immediately from the end of Volume 2. Each volume is around 40,000 words. Four Leaf Clover is a novelette set some time after the end of Volume 3.

ETA: Just on the off-chance there's someone reading this who doesn't realise, this is a gay erotic romance series. The first chapter of volume 1 is more or less work-safe, but the rest of it isn't.

Apparently it's "nag Jules about The Syndicate" week. Thus, I have dumped vol3 and Four Leaf Clover into HTML and uploaded them to the website for the benefit of those who bought the print edition of the first two volumes and didn't get to the other two pieces until after they'd gone out of print. I will prettify it at some point, and tidy the links. And eventually do the first two volumes as well.

Lord and Master 2 cover art - gay romance novellaIt was just an office affair, with wonderful sex. Young scientist Mark Paulson liked older men, especially tall, dark, and very handsome men like his new boss. Self-made millionaire Steven Frost had no trouble finding sex, but what he needed was a friend who shared his interests; someone like the young assistant he'd just hired. What started as simply great sex between friends has become much, much more, and now they're engaged.

Life's never that simple, of course. Other people have an interest in Steven's welfare and Steven's money, and they're not about to let the pretty little PA half his age take control of either. There's a reason why Steven was still single at the age of forty-four, and some of his family are intent on ensuring that Mark finds out about it the hard way.

But Mark already knows -- true love is about more than champagne and roses.

Lord and Master cover artThe new short story about the characters from Lord and Master is now available on my website. It's set on Mark's thirtieth birthday, about two years after their wedding, i.e. some time after both the original novel and the forthcoming sequel. This is a standalone and you don't need to have read the novel first, though obviously you'll get more out of it if you already know the characters. For those who wanted to see something from Steven's POV, here's your chance. Around 7100 words, contemporary m/m romance, one sex scene.

Flight of Dreams

Comments on the story are welcome. Comments are also welcome on any broken code on the page, as I'm still getting to grips with CSS. :-)

All Julian wants for Yule is his submissive: the gorgeous, blond, sexy Karl. But Karl has just got a new job in his homeland of Sweden. Can Julian arrange a session that's intense enough to touch both Karl's pagan beliefs and his heart and keep him in England?

Re-enacting the sacrifice of Odin upon Yggdrasil as a safe BDSM scenario might be the thing to give Karl inner knowledge; after all, Yule is the feast of Odin, the all-seeing. And submissives do find clarity in surrender…

My short story And if I offered thee a bargain has just been published on the free webzine Forbidden Fruit:

http://forbiddenfruitzine.com/bargain.htm

This is the one which was accidentally dropped from the Distant Horizons anthology. A warning to the romance fans -- this one's from the sf/fantasy side of my output, and while it has a love story, it is *not* genre romance.

I got my mitts on my trib copy of Mammoth Book of Lesbian Erotica a couple of days ago, which reassures me that the book really does exist. Interestingly, I've got the US edition (published by Carroll & Graf), not the UK edition, which amongst other things means that I now know the US ISBN. The book *is* available from Amazon US, but they've confused it with an earlier volume under the same name but by a different editor, and assumed that it's just a new edition of that book.

I haven't seen my contributor's copy yet and I haven't been into a bookshop this week, so I have no direct evidence that the book physically exists, but Amazon UK says it now has stock of the anthology where you'll find my latest short story.

Alex and I saw a call for submissions for an anthology of funny lesbian erotica, and while we don't normally do f/f, we liked the premise of the anthology so much that it sparked an idea. Unfortunately, while the story was held for further consideration, the anthology never came out -- a victim of the publisher having to rearrange its schedule after Hurricane Katrina. So I submitted it to the Mammoth Book of Lesbian Erotica, and it was accepted. The anthology was released on 30 August, and is available from Amazon UK and other European Amazon sites, if I'm understanding the foreign language pages correctly. It's published by a UK publisher, and at the moment doesn't appear to be available from Amazon US, though doubtless it will turn up there eventually. Here's our blurb for the story:

Love Is Blind
Contemporary erotic romance short story (with Alex Woolgrave), f/f, mild BDSM, 2800 words. It's a hard life being a writer's partner, especially when they want to try out an idea for practicality -- at four in the morning...

John just wants a little privacy. He finds it in a shared house with flatmates who are friendly without being intrusive; people who don't pry into his personal things or his personal life. And it certainly doesn't hurt that the landlord is an attractive man who doesn't assume that attraction means an automatic invitation.

He's a dom with a bad history of relationships going sour because of his needs, so he's in no hurry to expose his private desires. He'd rather just enjoy the view. Lucky for him, his landlord Charles has a liking for mysterious parcels, and he's got the patience to wait to find the rose behind the thorns.

Martin's a sexual submissive, but he's nobody's doormat. So when he discovered that his boyfriend was already married, he told him to go. When it still hurt weeks later, a seaside break housesitting for a friend seemed just the thing to help him heal.

When he made friends with two dolphins, he was simply grateful for the pleasant company. He didn't expect to need their help when his small boat was caught in a storm. And he never expected them to ask for payment -- or what shape they'd be in when they did so...

His dolphins turning into two handsome men had to be a hallucination, born of concussion and longing. Not just handsome, but the sort of men he wanted -- dominant without being domineering, men who were secure enough to consider his needs as well as their own. Doms desperate for a sub who was a real partner, not just someone looking for a few days' fling. It couldn't be real, not when it was so much what he wanted.

But it was real. And now Martin has a brand new set of problems to worry about. Two men. Men who aren't quite men, who have problems of their own...

Loose Id's New Year's Eve themed m/m romance anthology A Kiss At Midnight is now available. Three novellas for $6.99:

First Footer by Jules Jones
They say that how you spend New Year's Day will set the pattern for the rest of your year. Hence the old custom of the First Footing: to bring good luck to the household, the first person across the threshold after midnight should be a tall dark man holding a lump of coal and a bottle of whisky. When Matthew’s First Footer is a First Contact team member with fur, a tail, and a very seductive purr, well, it’s going to be an interesting year for Matthew…

The Burning Man by Ally Blue
Zach is a doctoral level archaeology student working on the excavation of a Creek village in southwest Alabama, and the nearby cave containing signs of a Spanish camp. Jonny is a well respected doctor of archaeology, an expert in ancient religions, called in to investigate a strange statue found in the cave. As they work together to uncover the startling mystery of the statue, their relationship deepens into something more than either of them ever bargained for.

Wildest Dreams by Emily Veinglory
The new year is coming, and with it a new era of peace and cooperation between the many races of the were people. But for Luke, a lone wolf on the run from his past and his predatory nature, the new year may not be joyous. Especially when his new lover, an exiled were deer is kidnapped, and he must rely on new, non-wolf, friends to help him defeat the ‘Big Bad Wolf’ who wants to go back to a time when wolves were wolves and deer were…dinner.

Excerpts from all the stories available at the Loose Id website, and more excerpts from my story First Footer available on my website.

And a most excellent collection it is too, even if I do say so myself. :-)

Spindrift 2: Ship to Shore
ISBN: 1-59632-178-4
Author: Jules Jones
Cover Artist: April Martinez
Price: $3.99

When myth comes to life, love becomes legendary…
When writer Richard Dunn moved to a remote Scottish village, all he was
looking for was peace to write. He never dreamed that he'd find love,
and the truth at the heart of a legend. Now Richard is one of those
protecting the village's secret--a few, terribly few now, of the seals
near the village are more than seals. They're silkies, shape-changing
fairy folk. And one of them is Richard's partner Niall.

Their village offers a relatively safe home for silkies, with most
tourists looking only for the pretty scenery or the good fishing. But
the silkies are threatened by the arrival of a group of tourists who are
interested in hunting more than fish--and the first seal they find is
Niall's sister. She chooses to stay in seal form rather than betray the
secret, even when she's attacked and injured.

With Ailsa's life hanging in the balance, the villagers band together
for defense—but it’s up to Richard and Niall to protect each other and
the community they’ve grown to trust.

If you've ever been tempted by the idea of a guy dressed in nothing but black leather boots and half a pint of whipped cream, here's a suitable bit of cheerful porn. Explicit m/m sex, but vanilla rather than kink.

When myth comes to life, love becomes legendary…

Writer Richard Dunn's managed to get himself accepted by the
fishermen in the village he lives in for half the year. Just how well
accepted he doesn't realize, until the night he stumbles on an
argument involving a local man he hasn't met before--and finds
himself asked to give a silkie a bed for the night.

Niall is a silkie. A creature of legend—a seal, able to become human
by removing his skin and to become seal again by slipping it back on.
That's a bit of a problem, since Niall's seal-skin has been stolen by
a man in love with Niall's sister. The thief will only give it back
in exchange for his sister's, which means he's trapped in human form.
Unless he betrays her, or his friends find his skin.

Trapped ashore, with no official identity and no bank accounts, Niall
needs a refuge. His human friends think that a wealthy writer with a
known ability to respect other people's secrets might be just the
ticket. All the better that both of them are gay and single...

But Richard's only too aware of the legends of silkie women abducted
and forced to marry land men. It's hard to ignore the old tale, when
one of the fishermen has just made a bid to re-enact it. It's not an
example Richard wants to follow. He's determined to help Niall get
his skin back, even if it costs him the love of a lifetime.
